Beim Reiten sitzt ein Mensch (ca. 75 kg) auf einem Pferd (ca. 450 kg). Obwohl das Gewichtsverhältnis dabei etwa eins zu sieben beträgt, maßt sich der eine an, den anderen nach Belieben lenken und gar dessen Gangarten stilisieren zu wollen. Dabei treten offensichtlich zwei Arten von Problemen auf: Die einen betreffen das Gleichgewicht, die anderen die Kommunikation von Reiter und Pferd.

Reply by Philippe Karl to the article “Få pejl på piaffen” in the Swedish riding magazine “Ridsport”, in which Eric Lette, former Chairman of the Dressage Committee of the FEI, comments on the perfect piaffe.

In his comments on the piaffe of Wilson, Mr. Lette wrote: “To go into the subject of piaffe in detail, I should need to write a book.” By the following analysis of his article I am going to exempt him from such a useless work and rather advise him to read some master´s books.

Dear Sir,

Allow me to summarize your words: the use of a high hand is "inept... distressing... stupid"; while a low hand is something akin to an equestrian panacea. As a person used to being described by those who like restrictive concepts and quick judgements as an "apostle of the high hand", I consider it my duty to enlighten you on this matter. So let′s substitute the simplistic arguments and disparaging adjectives by technical rigour and calm analysis.

Cher Monsieur,

Résumons votre pensée: l‘emploi de la main haute est « inepte.... navrant... stupide... ubuesque »; tandis que la main basse confine à la panacée équestre. Moi dont les amateurs de concepts réducteurs et de jugements expéditifs font un apôtre de la main haute, je me fais un devoir d‘éclairer votre lanterne. Cela dit, permettez qu‘aux arguments simplistes et aux qualificatifs désobligeants, nous substituions rigueur technique et sérénité.

Mi permetta di riassumere le Sue parole: l’uso della mano alta è "inopportuno.... doloroso...ottuso"; mentre una mano bassa è un qualcosa di comune ad una panacea equestre. Da persona che viene di solito descritta da quelli a cui piacciono i concetti restrittivi e i giudizi facili come un "apostolo della mano alta", considero mio dovere illuminarLa su tale argomento. Perciò sostituirò gli argomenti semplicistici e gli aggettivi dispregiativi con precisione, tecnica e una tranquilla analisi.
