Seit Gründung des Fördervereins der Ecole de Légèreté kann APPEL auf eine Vielzahl von Messeteilnahmen zurückblicken. Messen wie die HansePferd in Hamburg (Deutschland) oder die Fieracavalli in Verona (Italien) haben bereits seit Jahren einen festen Platz in der Projekt- und Budgetplanung von APPEL.
Allerdings ist Messe nicht gleich Messe. Die Weltmesse EQUITANA in Essen (Deutschland) – auch „Mutter aller Pferdemessen“ genannt – feierte vom 13. bis 21. März 2019 ihren 25. Geburtstag. Bekannte Ausbilder und Reiter wie Ingrid Klimke, Monty Roberts und Linda Tellington-Jones wurden erwartet. Natürlich gibt es wegen der starken kommerziellen Ausrichtung der EQUITANA auch Kritiker, die eine Teilnahme mit Skepsis sehen. Allerdings sind sich alle darin einig, dass diese Messe die größte internationale Plattform im Pferdesport bietet.
Bereits 2015 und 2017 hatte sich die Ecole de Légèreté im kleineren Rahmen auf der EQUITANA vorgestellt. Aber eine Teilnahme am Tagesprogramm über alle neun Messetage hatte es noch nicht gegeben. Für die Ecole de Légèreté war das ein finanziell bislang nicht realisierbares Etappenziel.
Dank wachsender Mitgliederzahlen und des damit zur Verfügung stehenden Deutschland-Budgets konnte der Vorstand von APPEL Ende 2018 die Teilnahme an der EQUITANA 2019 im großen Rahmen beschließen.
Natürlich reicht Geld allein nicht aus, um eine neun Tage dauernde Weltmesse erfolgreich zu stemmen. Man braucht viel Messe-Knowhow, ein gutes und funktionierendes Team sowie natürlich Reiter und Pferde, die die Ecole de Légèreté professionell präsentieren. Und einen Philippe Karl ... Freundlicherweise hatte Herr Karl seine Teilnahme mit seinem Hannoveraner-Wallach High Noon für die EQUITANA 2019 zugesagt.
Für die Planung einer Messeteilnahme dieser Größenordnung brauchen die Organisatoren starke Nerven. Vieles ist zu bedenken. Das Wichtigste: die Präsentationen in den Ringen. Hier sind Ausdauer und Verhandlungsgeschick gefragt – und ein guter Draht zur Messeleitung. Als die Zeitpläne fertig waren – natürlich wurden die Auftrittszeiten bis zur letzten Sekunde hin- und hergeschoben –, staunte selbst das Messeteam um Antje Matthes, Sonja Hellwig, Sophie Horstmann, Sabine Mosen, Ilka Flegel sowie Bea Borelle und Philippe Karl: 52 Programmpunkte in neun Tagen! Eine echte Herausforderung – aber auch eine große Chance für die Ecole de Légèreté.
Da kein Reiter und vor allem kein Pferd überfordert und neun Tage lang dem Messestress ausgesetzt werden sollte, wurden zwei Gruppen gebildet.
Unter der Leitung von Sabine Mosen, Master Instructor der Ecole de Légèreté, starteten am Samstag, den 9. März, Sonja Hellwig mit PRE-Hengst Hercules Cen, Bettina Lanowy mit Haflinger-Wallach Mirco, Sarah Rob mit Westfalen-Stute Fee und David Scheer mit Sachsen-Anhaltiner-Wallach Danny.
Ab Donnerstag, den 14. März, übernahm die zweite Reitergruppe unter der Leitung von Philippe Karl: Bea Borelle aus Frankreich mit Trakehner-Stute Skamilla, Irene Boss mit Connemara-Wallach George, Hanna und Christiane Horstmann mit Lusitano-Hengst Uriel, Katja Lauer mit Westfalen-Wallach Ibu, Bertrand Ravoux aus Frankreich mit Selle-Français-Wallach Santic de Linganab, Barbara Stübenrath mit Noriker-Wallach Moses und Anna Wallén aus Schweden mit Lusitano-Hengst Que Halo. Unterstützt wurde Philippe Karl von seiner Frau Bea Borelle und Sabine Mosen, beide Master Intructor der Ecole de Légèreté.
Besonders wichtig war dem Messeteam die Präsenz der Ecole de Légèreté mit einem ansprechenden, zentral in der Ausbildungshalle gelegenen Messestand. Dank der Messeleitung konnte APPEL einen optimalen Standort direkt am Hauptgang der Halle 6 vor dem Tribünenring buchen. Da der Bau eines Messestands durch eine Fremdfirma wegen der hohen Kosten nicht infrage kam, wurde der Messestand bereits Wochen vor der EQUITANA in Eigenregie geplant, gefertigt und probeweise aufgebaut. Nichts sollte dem Zufall überlassen werden.
Neun Tage können eine lange Zeit mit unerwarteten Ereignissen werden. Bereits am ersten Tag hatte ein ungebetener Gast die EQUITANA voll im Griff. Orkan „Eberhard“ wütete mit Windgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 120 Stundenkilometern über Essen und sorgte für extrem viel Wirbel. Weitere Sturmtiefs und nahezu tägliche Unwetterwarnungen folgten.
Die Stallzelte wurden zu einem echten Sicherheitsproblem und standen sogar kurz vor der Evakuierung. Extrem betroffen war das Hengstzelt, in dem das Wasser als Bach durch die Boxen floss. Die EQUITANA-Leitung stellte täglich neue Späne zur Verfügung. Der Orkan sorgte für eine extreme Geräuschkulisse, die den Pferden Stress verursachte. Um die Zelte zu sichern, wurden sämtliche LKWs mobilisiert und als Windschutz um die Stallzelte herum positioniert. Die Abreitezelte waren aufgrund des Orkans kaum zu benutzen. Die Planen schlugen in das Zelt und rissen teilweise. Selbst der Weg von den Stallzelten zu den Messehallen wurde zu einem Abenteuer.
Dagegen waren kleine Überraschungen wie ein am Morgen um das Hengstzelt herum mit 16 Stuten trainierender Lorenzo auf seinem Einrad schon eher lustig. Allerdings nicht für die Hengste ...
Einen Schrecken jagte Philippe Karl dem Messeteam ein, als er am Freitag morgen – einen Tag vor seinem ersten Auftritt in der großen Showarena – vor Schmerzen gekrümmt am Messestand saß und kaum mehr aufstehen, geschweige denn laufen oder gar reiten konnte. Die hilfreichen Sanitäter brachten ihn schleunigst per Krankenwagen in die Klinik, wo sich zum Glück herausstellte, dass er sich zwar einen starken Hexenschuss, aber keinen ernsthaften Schaden an der Wirbelsäule zugezogen hatte. Dank der heilenden Hände von Physiotherapeutin und Ecole de Légèreté-Schülerin Hanna Scheper konnte Herr Karl bereits am nächsten Tag wieder im Standpunkt.Pferd auf der Bühne stehen, Zuschauerfragen beantworten und am Messestand Autogramme geben. An einen Auftritt mit High Noon war allerdings nicht zu denken. Kurzerhand improvisierte das Reiterteam einen Ersatzauftritt, der trotz mangelnder Vorbereitungszeit sehr erfolgreich verlief und bei den Zuschauern auf den Rängen der Showarena an den beiden letzten Messetagen großen Anklang fand.
Ein großes Lob allen Beteiligten für ihr Engagement sowie ihre Professionalität, Flexibilität, Improvisationskunst und starken Nerven selbst unter widrigen Umständen!
Das Fazit nach neun Tagen EQUITANA:
Tolle und hochkarätige Präsentationen aller Reiter und Pferde im Tribünenring, in den Trainingsringen und in der großen Showarena.
Ein – trotz Schmerzen – souveräner und immer ansprechbarer Philippe Karl.
Zwei kompetente und engagierte Master Instructoren: Sabine Mosen und Bea Borelle.
Ein High Noon, der sich wahrscheinlich gefragt hat, warum er zum Möhrenessen quer durch Europa fahren musste.
Interessante und anregende Gespräche mit vielen interessierten Messebesuchern an den Ringen und am Messestand.
Ein zufriedenes und glückliches Team am Messestand.
Ein – trotz Wind und Hexenschuss – professionelles und überzeugendes Bild der Ecole de Légèreté.

Behind the Scenes – The Ecole de Légèreté at the EQUITANA 2019 in Essen
Since its creation as the promotional association of the Ecole de Légèreté, APPEL can look back on participation in numerous trade fairs. Trade fairs such as the HansePferd in Hamburg (Germany) or the Fieracavalli in Verona (Italy) have already for years had a regular place in APPEL’s project- and budget planning.
However, not every trade fair is the same. The world fair EQUITANA in Essen (Germany) – also called the “the mother of all equestrian fairs” – celebrated its 25th anniversary from 13th to 21st March 2019. Well-known instructors and riders such as Ingrid Klimke, Monty Roberts and Linda Tellington-Jones were due to take part. Although, due to its commercial orientation, the EQUITANA also has its critics who are skeptical about participating. Nevertheless, everyone agrees that the fair offers the biggest international platform for equestrian sport.
Already in 2015 and 2017, the Ecole de Légèreté was represented on a smaller scale at the EQUITANA. However, this is the first time that APPEL has been a part of the daily program on all nine days of the fair. For the Ecole de Légèreté this was a milestone, which before was not achievable financially.
Thanks to the growing number of members and the as a result available German budget, the Board of APPEL was able at the end of 2018 to approve participation in the EQUITANA 2019 on a large scale.
Of course, money alone is not enough to achieve success over nine days at a world fair. A great deal of trade fair know-how, a good and functional team, and of course riders and horses that present the Ecole de Légèreté on a professional level. And a Philippe Karl ... who kindly agreed to appear at the EQUITANA 2019 with his Hanoverian gelding High Noon.
To plan participation in a trade fair on this scale, the organizers require strong nerves. A great deal has to be considered. Most important: the presentations in the riding rings. Here, persistence and good negotiating skills are important - and a good relationship with the fair management. When the timetable was announced – the performance times were rearranged right up to the last minute – the team of Antje Matthes, Sonja Hellwig, Sophie Horstmann, Sabine Mosen and Ilka Flegel together with Bea Borelle and Philippe Karl were astounded: 52 program items in nine days! A real challenge – but also a great opportunity for the Ecole de Légèreté.
Two groups were formed so that no rider, and above all no horse, would be overworked and exposed to nine days of stress at the fair.
Starting on Saturday, 9th March the first group led by Sabine Mosen, Master Instructor at the Ecole de Légèreté, consisted of Sonja Hellwig with PRE-stallion Hercules Cen, Bettina Lanowy with Haflinger-gelding Mirco, Sarah Rob with Westfalen-mare Fee and David Scheer with Sachsen-Anhaltiner-gelding Danny.
From Thursday, 14th March the second group of riders took over. Led by Philippe Karl this group was Bea Borelle from France with Trakehner-mare Skamilla, Irene Boss with Connemara-gelding George, Hanna and Christiane Horstmann with Lusitano-stallion Uriel, Katja Lauer with Westfalen-gelding Ibu, Bertrand Ravoux from France with Selle-Français-gelding Santic de Linganab, Barbara Stübenrath with Noriker-gelding Moses und Anna Wallén from Sweden with Lusitano-stallion Que Halo. Philippe Karl was assisted by his wife Bea Borelle and Sabine Mosen, both Master Instructors at the Ecole de Légèreté.
Particularly important for the team at the fair was the presence of the Ecole de Légèreté with an attractive stand, centrally located in the training hall. Thanks to the fair management, APPEL was able to obtain an optimal location directly at the main entrance of Hall 6 in front of the grandstand ring. Since having a stand built by an outside firm was out of the question due to the high costs, we ourselves designed and constructed the stand and erected it as a test weeks before the EQUITANA. Nothing was to be left to chance.
Nine days can be a long time when unexpected events occur. Already on the first day, an uninvited guest had the EQUITANA firmly in its grip. Hurricane “Eberhard” raged over Essen with wind speeds of up to 120 km/h and caused a lot of concern. Further storms and almost daily weather warnings followed.
The stable tents became a real safety problem and were close to being evacuated. The stallion tent in particular was badly affected with a stream of water running through the stalls. The EQUITANA management supplied new sawdust every day. The hurricane caused an extreme amount of background noise, which was stressful for the horses. To secure the tents, all available trucks were mobilized and positioned around the stable tents to provide wind protection. Due to the hurricane, the cooling-down tents could hardly be used. The canvases flapped into the tent and some were torn. Even the trip from the stable tents to the performance halls became an adventure.
On the other hand, some surprises, such as one morning seeing Lorenzo on his unicycle training 16 mares near the stallion tent, were more amusing. Although not for the stallions …
Philippe Karl caused the team a scare on Friday morning – one day before his first performance in the main show ring – as he sat bent double with pain on our stand and could hardly stand up, let alone walk or ride. The paramedics were very helpful and took him as quickly as possible by ambulance to a clinic, where it turned out that he did have severe lumbago but fortunately no serious damage to his spine. Thanks to the healing hands of physiotherapist and Ecole de Légèreté student Hanna Scheper, Philippe Karl was already able to appear next day on the stage of Point of View.Horse to answer audience questions, and to sign autographs on our stand. However, an appearance with High Noon was out of the question. At short notice, the team of riders improvised a replacement performance, which, despite a lack of time for proper preparation, was very successful and very well received in the show arena by the spectators in the stands on the last two days of the fair.
A great deal of praise must go to all participants for their commitment as well as their professionalism, flexibility, improvisation skills and strong nerves even under difficult circumstances!
Conclusion after nine days EQUITANA:
Fantastic and top-class performances by all riders and horses in the tribune ring; in the training rings and in the big arena.
A Philippe Karl, who, despite being in pain, was self-assured and always approachable.
Two competent and committed Master Instructors: Sabine Mosen and Bea Borelle.
A High Noon who was probably asking himself why he had to travel half across Europe just to eat some carrots.
Interesting and stimulating conversations with visitors to the fair at the riding rings and on our stand.
A satisfied and happy team on our stand at the fair.
A professional and convincing picture of the Ecole de Légèreté, despite wind and lumbago.
The effort was worth it!
